Rational Belief Systems
This book defends the view that the laws of logic are laws of thought, and have a status similar to other scientific laws. The most basic laws of the physical sciences are not just universal generalizations about how ordinary things behave in ordinary physical systems; they refer to various kinds of idealized entities and circumstances which model, usually imperfectly, real entities and circumstances in the physical world, and are formulated as laws governing the behavior of such things in such circumstances. It is argued that the laws of logic are like this. They are laws governing the structure of ideally rational belief systems on idealized languages which model, always less than perfectly, ordinary human belief systems on natural languages.
The book develops a theory of rational belief systems which is adequate to provide a foundation for most of the standard logical systems, including the sentential and predicate calculi, the various modal systems, the conditional logics and the probability calculus.
